Bulemia
Bulemia is an eating disorder, often also known as bulimia nervosa. It is the most common type of eating disorder beside anorexia nervosa. Bulemia is the habit of eating large amounts of food quickly, also described as binge eating. If binge eating happens frequently then you are suffering from bulemia. Bulimia is harmful because it is often accompanied with other bad habits like the intentional vomiting after binge eating periods. The person feels guilty about eating so much food that he or she purges in order to get rid of it. Bulemia or binge eating is assumed to be a mental disorder but it can also have physical causes.
The triggers of bulimia nervosa can be emotions like anger or depression. The person eats although there is no feel of hunger just to compensate for other feelings. Bulimia was first described by a doctor in London 1977 and was then recognized as eating disorder 1980 by the American Psychiatric Association.
Statistics say that many young women suffer from this eating disorder. Every tenth women can have signs of bulemia. Often these women take drugs like diuretics or laxatives to control their weight and eating habits.
Against common believe, bulemia sufferers are often not overweight either, what makes discovering the disorder difficult. Usually the person having binge eating habits does not show this habit on the public. Since it is very difficult to control this habit, bulemia and binge eating must be treated by a professional therapist to identify the underlying emotions and reasons.
Often drugs accompany the bulimia treatment. Some medications that have been proven to be helpful for depressions are also effective for bulemia therapy.
The earlier the therapy is started, the greater the chance for success and the less likely are the negative long-term effects of this eating disorder. Bright light therapy is another option in conjunction with cognitive-behavioral therapy.
The real reasons behind this eating disorder are still researched. Today, eating disorders like bulemia and anorexia are widely discussed in the media because of the thin models and celebrities. But not everybody who is thin or overweight has an eating disorder. It is important though to detect eating disorders like bulemia early in order to be treated successfully. The increasing awareness of this problem should help more people.
